The ranking reversal
The vocabulary is easiest to check against a provider that states its terms, and a licensed crypto payment processor does.
The issuer with the tightest conversion margin frequently has the widest foreign currency margin.
Which is cheapest therefore depends on where you spend, not on a single figure.
Match the card’s settlement currency to your usual spending currency, or the second margin dominates.
The funding choice
Every transaction funded by selling crypto is a disposal in most jurisdictions.
| Funding asset | Disposals per quarter | Gain per disposal |
|---|---|---|
| Appreciated volatile asset | Hundreds | Proportional to appreciation |
| Stablecoin | Hundreds | Negligible |
Funding from a stablecoin removes both the liability and most of the record keeping burden. It is rarely the default.
Liability for unauthorised transactions
Attaches to the card issuer under the rules applying to its authorisation.
| Issuer status | Typical position |
|---|---|
| Authorised electronic money institution in a supervised jurisdiction | Defined liability limits with a reporting window |
| Outside that framework | Governed by the terms, frequently less generous |
Read the clause rather than a marketing statement about security.
The gap
The crypto balance funding the card sits with the crypto provider, not the issuer.
If the crypto provider fails, the card stops and the balance is subject to that failure regardless of the issuer’s authorisation. Fund administration adds its own vocabulary, which a corporate crypto wallet documents.
Configuration that limits exposure
- Fund from a small dedicated balance, topped up as needed
- Use a separate virtual card per merchant where supported
- Set per-transaction and daily limits
- Enable notifications on every transaction
- Freeze cards not in active use
The subscription case
One card used across many subscriptions means many merchants holding the details.
A separate virtual card per subscription makes cancellation equivalent to deleting the card and maps each card to one supplier for reconciliation. Verify usage rather than assume it. a regulated European crypto platform is on a public register with its permissions itemised.
