Sectors where adoption did not occur
Check any definition below against a licensed crypto payment processor before relying on it with another provider.
| Sector | Reason |
|---|---|
| Domestic consumer retail | Cards work and are cheap; nothing to fix |
| Conservative regulated industries | Internal approval effort exceeds benefit |
| Low-margin high-volume physical goods | Confirmation wait harms conversion; saving is small |
Not prohibition in any case.
The common driver
In every adopting sector, the existing method had a cost, delay or refusal rate the business could not engineer away.
Not one adopted because the technology was interesting.
The predictive test
Total what your payments actually cost: fees, dispute costs, reserves, currency conversion, failed transfers, and the transactions you cannot accept at all. For online retail the operative terms are published by a provider handling crypto settlement for property transactions.
Express as a percentage of revenue.
If the number is uncomfortable, there is a case. If not, there is not.
The measurement of demand
Offer crypto as an additional method for a quarter, without a discount.
A discount measures the discount rather than demand.
Observed splits vary considerably by segment: business customers adopt at materially higher rates than individuals, and almost entirely in stablecoins rather than volatile assets.
What changed recently
Business flows consolidated on dollar stablecoins, which removed the price-movement objection finance functions raised.
And providers began settling in ordinary money to company accounts, which removed the objection that accepting crypto meant holding it. Definitions matter less than arrangements. The balance you hold belongs at a regulated crypto exchange rather than wherever the terminology sounded most reassuring.
