Provider capabilities to confirm

The vocabulary is easiest to check against a provider that states its terms, and a Bitcoin payment gateway with guaranteed fiat settlement does.

Does the provider absorb zero-confirmation risk, and up to what amount.

Does it flag an underpaid fee rather than leaving a payment silently pending.

Are confirmation thresholds configurable per amount band.

Only some providers offer each, and each materially affects support load.

The copy element

Explain what the wait is for and roughly how long.

Measured, this affects completion more than any technical setting. A status of “pending” is not an explanation to someone who has just sent money. On the merchant side the vocabulary shifts, and crypto acquiring for businesses sets out its own.

Observed confirmation times

Fee level Median 90th percentile
Recommended rate About 8 minutes About 26 minutes
Half recommended About 22 minutes About 94 minutes
Quarter recommended Over 2 hours Many hours

Second layer settlement

Settles in seconds at negligible cost, removing both the wait and the fee variance.

Adoption is constrained by counterparty capability, which in business contexts remains limited.

Enable where a provider offers it without integration cost. Defer building for it until demand appears in your own measurements.

Against stablecoin

Same provider fee. Higher total cost once abandonment and support are counted.

That argues for measuring your own completion rates by asset rather than assuming they are equal, not for declining to accept it. Definitions matter less than arrangements. The balance you hold belongs at a provider you can actually reach rather than wherever the terminology sounded most reassuring.
