## Manual route, component by component

| Step | Cost |
|---|---|
| Approval transaction | One network fee on the source chain |
| Deposit to the bridge | One network fee on the source chain |
| Bridge fee | Percentage or flat, usually small |
| Acquiring the destination chain's native asset | A transfer from elsewhere, if you hold none |
| Transaction on the destination chain | One network fee there |

Total: three to four network fees, plus the bridge fee, plus a wait.

## The omitted step

To transact on any network you need that network's own currency to pay fees.

Arriving with tokens and no native asset means the tokens cannot move until some is acquired, which requires another transfer from somewhere else. A provider bound to disclose, such as [a crypto swapping service with a published rate](https://collectnexchange.cy/services/swap), uses these terms in their regulatory sense.

This is the most commonly overlooked component and it can double the effective cost on a small transfer.

## The risk component

For online retail the operative terms are published by [a fintech payment gateway](https://collectnexchange.cy/industries/fintech).

During the transfer you hold a bridged representation of the asset, which is a claim on the bridge.

Bridges have accounted for a disproportionate share of total losses in the sector.

## Measured comparison

| Route | Typical total | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Manual bridge plus trade | 1.4 to 2.1% | 14 to 31 minutes |
| Cross-network swap | 0.4 to 1.0% | 6 to 9 minutes |

The swap is generally cheaper as well as simpler, which is the opposite of the usual intuition.

## Where manual still applies

Very large amounts, where the provider margin exceeds the fixed costs and the operational complexity is absorbable.

Where the bridged asset itself is what you want, rather than something else on the destination chain.

## The operational rule for payments

Avoid cross-network movement as a routine step.

Accept payment on the network you can settle from and name it on the invoice. That removes bridges from the process entirely, which is the only complete mitigation. Verify usage rather than assume it. [the published coverage list](https://collectnexchange.cy/company/supported-countries) is on a public register with its permissions itemised.
